Project Overview
In March 2018, when I joined at Samsung R&D Institute Bangladesh (SRBD), I was given the opportunity to get involved in the iOS version of Samsung's one of the most popular application - Samsung Health.

The project was about the conversion of android version to iOS version along with QA. I worked as a GUI Designer in this project for more than 3 years alongside my lead and HQ (South Korea) counterpart.
The Journey from Photoshop to Sketch
The Android app was designed in Photoshop like any other application back then because “Sketch” was still in it’s early stage and there were no other UX/UI specialized tools that are popular now. By the time when the iOS version was planned, it was only logical to shift the design into one of these new tools that are more efficient for long term digital products.

The initial challenge was to find a strategic approach by which we could redesign all the UI elements again in Sketch while ensuring that new features are also released parallelly. It took us few months to prepare the whole design system right from scratch along with components library for every modules and there were a lot of them.

The results were rewarding as we had the complete library of UI elements prepared right inside of our sketch file that we could just use right away for any new feature without having to refer back and forth from Photoshop to Sketch.
Designing for the iOS Users
If the design layouts were kept identical for both platforms, there was no need to rework on the design. As the intention was to make the app feel more native for the iOS users, we needed to consider each elements that could fit within iOS design layout.

To achieve that, along with referring to the Apple Human Interface Guideline, we often used to explore different system applications. That helped us to better understand about what iOS users are used to and thus keep alignment with the iOS visual language in terms of layout.

But it was not always about UI, there were some cases where we needed to reconsider the user flow because of the dependencies of two platforms. Those cases were resolved by conducting back and forth discussions with the developers to decide on what was possible and what would be more usable for iOS users.
Collaboration is the Key
There were different developer groups working for each major module along with design teams of both platforms. Therefore, collaboration was vital to ensure each version is released in the market on time and with proper quality.
We were not only working to release the iOS design guidelines for each new feature, we had to constantly communicate with the developers to ensure that the UI guidelines are understood properly and well executed by cross-checking the issues and to help resolve them before every release.
A large team of testers tested the app in all sorts of scenarios where we often had to adjust our UI layouts so that the design fits even in the odd most cases and most importantly so that the experience  remains consistent.
We had to make small adjustments for each of the screens that were affected and provide separate guidelines for those new models.
Right from the beginning we considered iPhone 8 as our base model for design. After the release of iPhone X series, there were a lot of issues related to UI because of the larger screen sizes and new height-width ratios.
The Outcome
Bringing the whole design system into Sketch resulted in more efficient workflow. Because we were not only able to design faster but also could generate developers guideline in HTML almost instantly which would’ve taken hours to do in Photoshop. We also had the leverage to update any future changes and maintain consistency throughout the design guideline, thanks to components.

Moreover, while this project was ongoing and we were delivering UX materials successfully, Samsung HQ were keen enough to include SRBD UX team in another project where we had to prepare UI flow & guidelines for Samsung Wearables iOS app.

We will share that story in another time.
Thank you.

MUTAHER HOSSAIN

Working as a full stack designer from Analysis to Design both in mobile and web platform. As a designer I believe design can solve problems around. Design thinking always push me to move forward with new ideas and help me to focus on my work.

Graduated in Textile Technology and 2 (two) years of job experience in that field couldn't held me away from designing. Changing the track was not easy and the shifting took about 1 (one) year. Started learning HTML, CSS back in 2015 and when I started converting PSD to HTML, UI design caught my attention and I got to know the term UX Design, started learning, working and never looked back.

I am a self learner and what I am today is because of my passion, honesty & dedication and most importantly collaboration with other great minds helped me a lot. My goal is to do ethical & good work and I want to use my skills in a way that has positive impact on our society and culture.
